Violin teaching Video Document Content Explanation

Part 1: Scale and Arpeggio Exercisers by Gregorian

These documents are created when I was teaching my students learning scales by Gregorian. The purpose of the video documents is to provide students the concept of the correct sound. Using these video documents for practice, it will at least ensure they will use slow tempo to practice the right intonation. All document names are by page number plus line number. For example, the file 12-1 means scale at page 12, line 1.

Part 2: Etudes

The violin is a very technical instrument. Etude studies are very useful to improve performance technique. Professor Zhang has published The Production of Primary Etude for Violin volume 1, 2 & 3 through Shanghai Music Press Ltd. He has developed video documents with four distinguished steps. These steps are

  • Learning by phrases
  • Slow tempo performance demonstration
  • Normal tempo performance demonstration
  • Explanation to teachers on the practise purpose and the way to practice this Etude

Professor Zhang has also produced some practice video documents for Mazas Etude studies.

Part 3: 100 days for Violin Beginners

This violin course is compiled into 10 lessons based on different technique training. These video documents usually are playing with the metronome in order to develop students with the stable sense of rhythms from the beginning. We believe developing the sense of rhythms is very important and this is often neglected by some violin teachers. Professor Zhang developed these video documents based on the students’ learnings procedures. These can be used for home practice. We would like to suggest students watch video demonstration first. Then, develop a good concept of sound and bowing movement. And then, start playing by themselves.

Considering many parents are not musicians, some don’t even have much music knowledge, how can they help children practise at home? Professor Zhang has developed a separate group of videos that allowing students to learn phrase by phrase for some of the difficult and long etudes and pieces in the ‘100 days for Violin Beginners’. These videos are made for those parents to help the children in their practice. The student can follow the videos and learn phrase by phrase as if professor Zhang is teaching in their home. Every phrase is compiled as one individual document. If student feels difficult on any particular phrase, the parent can replay that phrase for the child. We believe student’s every improvement is achieved through correct practice. If we can train parents to be a qualified assistant instructor, students must be able to achieve enormous improvement in violin learning.

All pieces in this book come with piano accompaniment. Students can play all pieces with piano accompaniment. Let them enjoy the beauty of music, enhance their interest in playing and prepare them to perform on the stage at the same time. It is been proven students don’t need to rehearse together beforehand and can perform ensembles on the stage through these standardised video practice.

Part 4: Concerto

Professor Zhang has compiled many concertos and collected them into 8 violin repertoire books. The video documents have been created in the progressive learning procedure.

  • Phrase by phrase demonstration
  • Play with metronome demonstration
  • Play slow tempo with piano demonstration
  • Play normal tempo with piano demonstration
  • Play with piano accompaniment only

It’s been proven in practice, using these video documents has significantly motivated students practising. It can avoid the possibility of making a lot of mistakes, improve learning progress, and reduce the teacher’s repetitive workload. The quantity of this part of the video document is significant.  Each movement of the concerto is made as one unit in all documents.

Part 5: Pieces

Professor Zhang has also compiled many violin pieces and collected them into 8 violin repertoire books. The principle for developing this part of the videos is the same as concertos’. They are created in the progressive learning procedure, too.

  • Phrase by phrase demonstration
  • Play with metronome demonstration
  • Play slow tempo with piano demonstration
  • Play normal tempo with piano demonstration
  • Play with piano accompaniment only

There are 55 first position pieces in the Zhang Shi Xiang Progressive Violin Repertoire Volume 1 for violin beginners. Professor Zhang has used the following 4 steps creating these video documents.

  • Play with metronome demonstration
  • Play slow tempo with piano demonstration
  • Play normal tempo with piano demonstration
  • Play with piano accompaniment only

If students want to learn pieces using these 4 steps, please follow these video documents. If you only want to use a particular step for your learning, there are 4 different folders for different learning steps. Parents and teachers can select the relevant steps from these documents.

Professor Zhang has also compiled a sequence of learning for everyone. These learning materials are arranged from easy to hard. You can select the relevant one to use. Please click here to see more details.

The advantage of using web-based teaching is self-evident; it is the necessity of historical development.
